The best way to begin is to not only ask a question but ask an important, vital question: How does it matter? Writing, in and of itself, does not matter inside a cafe, does not matter with the best cup of coffee, and it’s not well-informed by the political section of a newspaper. But, we know writing does matter, and it matters especially when the author has something to will, whether from within or from a great beyond. It’s understandable to think writing is merely a language tool, something to help the author or an individual to say, thus writing only matters when there is something to say.
Communication is important, of course, but the problem with communication is that it can be drastically boring. A bureaucrat likely has the most impressive set of communication skills, yet they’re just as boring as they’re faceless and evil. If what matters is purely cause and effect then we are well deserving of a managerial state…
But, we aren’t numbers to be moved inside an accounting formula, certainly not all the time. So, writing can’t and shouldn’t be merely about being a communication objective. Language is cultural not conditional, though it can be used for conditioning purposes. This article would go on longer than it needed to if I rambled on about cultural conditioners and bureaucrats, so I’ll just say writing must matter because, in my humble opinion, Truth cannot survive without Spirit lest tyrants continue to see Truth as justification for subjugation.
Play is something extremely important, but it can either be destructive or creative. We must not fool ourselves into thinking writing has no potential for destructive play. Certainly, we’ve fooled ourselves thinking numbers had no potential for destructive play, either. Maybe destructive players learned that a lack of self-awareness was needed in order to muddle everything down to dull, easily-ruled sentiments.
For me writing and imagination is freedom, but I can often neglect this out of fear or convenience. Why must writing matter to me when there are so many other tools I can use to grab an audience? Ah, but the question answers itself because I can’t truly be focused if I muddle my brain of all the things I could do, and thus liberty cannot be fully achieved if I’m paralyzed by the prison of thinking too much, only getting a reprieve through distractions…
Perhaps its time to create.
